Acknowledgement

We acknowledge and pay respects to the traditional owners on the land we work and live, and acknowledge that this land was stolen.
Always was, always will be Aboriginal land.
We live and work on many lands in Australia and in Aotearoa New Zealand.
We strive to live and work in a way that honours the Treaty of Waitangi and the obligations for white settlers.
We recognise that rangatiratanga (sovereignty) was never ceded, that the impact of colonisation is ongoing.
We recognise that colonising practices continue to this day in both Australia and Aotearoa, and cause ongoing harm to First Peoples and communities.
We believe that restorative approaches to past and ongoing harm may offer important lessons and opportunities for accountability.
We commit to practising personal and organisational accountability in our work, relationships and communities.

We support the Uluru Statement from the Heart - Voice, Treaty and Truth.

Our restorative principles

Survivor-oriented:
We are led by survivors’ voice, choice and wishes.

Personal and meaningful accountability:
We invite the person responsible to be accountable for harm in ways
which are meaningful to the person harmed.

Do no further harm:
We prioritize the safety, dignity and well-being of all participants.

Narrative approach:
We use dialogue and storytelling as mechanisms to address harm.
We use language that promotes accountability, hope and future planning.

Strengths- and community-based:
We recognize people are experts in their own lives.
We draw on solutions and capacities offered by community.

A restorative process:
We ensure restorative processes are voluntary, consent-based, participatory,
and flexible to meet the survivor’s needs.

  • We are committed to the development of scientific evidence-based practice; the development of our programs is predicated on the best available scientific research evidence.

    We are committed to providing evidence for the efficacy of our work and will use a monitoring and evaluation framework that looks at process, outcome and impacts.

    Whilst we value the scientific method, at heart we are knowledge seekers: curious, open to learning, willing to explore and driven to understand practices that have longevity, that are understood in community to lessen harm and that are respected in local fields.

    We balance learnings from the scientific field with learnings from community, and as we are not ideologically driven to practice in any particular way, able to continually adapt our work as best-practice around what works, for whom, under what conditions and why develops. Read more here

  • We provide training in restorative practices and work closely with a range of organisations to build understanding and awareness of restorative practices and how they can be situated to support the needs of those harmed and responsible for sexual abuse.

  • Our advocacy, reform and campaign initiatives are guided by our commitment to:

    work in ways that are restorative, that promote healing, accountability, and that do no further harm;

    always listen to the voices of individuals and communities harmed by sexual abuse;

    build opportunities for inviting and supporting meaningful accountability from those responsible for harm; and

    take time to understand the complex causes and factors that contribute to sexual abuse and other forms of violence.

    We advocate for the importance of community responses to sexual abuse, and are committed to elevating the voices of those harmed and those over- represented as victims of violence and in contact with the justice system including First Nations, people living with disability, culturally and linguistically diverse communities, children and young people.
